Engineering software scales differently: some tasks require dozens of cores, while others demand high clock speeds and memory per core. A server for simulations must be selected based on your specific licenses and solver, otherwise, half of your purchased cores will sit idle.
Look at the license and the solver: ANSYS is licensed by core, so the performance of each core is critical; Python/statistics scale horizontally. Sometimes 16 fast cores are more cost-effective than 64 slow ones, both in terms of hardware price and licensing.
Rule: 8–16 GB per million cells/elements. Tasks involving 20–50 million cells require 256–512 GB — choose platforms with a high number of DDR4/DDR5 slots.
