What usually makes it slow
The same four things, in this order.
Caching switched off or configured for a development environment. Composite caching alone often halves the load time on a catalogue page.
Then database queries: components that fetch the entire catalogue to display twelve items. Then images at full camera resolution. And finally the smart filter without indexes, which turns every click into a full scan.
Why we measure first
Without numbers, optimisation is a matter of opinion.
We record load time, server response and the heaviest queries before touching anything, then repeat the same measurements afterwards.
This has a side effect worth mentioning: sometimes the measurement shows the site is fine and the real problem is hosting. We say so instead of selling work that will not help.
