Specialized HDDs for video surveillance (WD Purple, Seagate SkyHawk) with 8–12 TB capacity: these are designed for 24/7 continuous recording. RAID5/6 will protect your archive from disk failure. SSDs in a video server are only needed for the OS and VMS database—writing streams to SSD is not cost-effective.
For pure recording — use a chassis: get a case for 8–12 3.5″ drives with expansion capability; a Xeon E/Bronze level processor is sufficient. If you plan to use analytics (motion, faces, license plates, hard hats) — include extra CPU headroom or a GPU slot immediately: buying a new server in a year is more expensive.
The formula is simple: camera bitrate × 0.45 TB per Mbps per month. 64 cameras at 4 MP require approximately 45 TB for 30 days, which means 7–8 drives of 8 TB each, accounting for RAID and redundancy. Our calculator above or our engineer can provide an exact calculation for your specific cameras.

For 4–8 cameras, yes, but without RAID, hot-swappable drives, and redundant power, any failure means loss of the archive. A server doesn't cost much more and records for years without maintenance—that's why sites with 16+ cameras are built only on server-grade hardware.
Analytics (faces, license plates, hard hats, zones) are processed on CPU or GPU over the recording. For 16–32 analytics channels, use 12+ cores or an RTX/L4-level GPU — we have GPU servers available and can select the right one for your VMS: Macroscop, Trassir, Axxon, Milestone.
