For OLTP (accounting systems, online stores) — frequency and disk latency are key: transactions are short, so single-thread speed is vital. For analytics and reports — cores and memory capacity matter. PostgreSQL and MS SQL benefit from both, so we recommend a Xeon Gold with a balance of 3.0+ GHz and 16–24 cores.
The ideal is to have the entire working set of the database in RAM. A 100 GB database runs comfortably on a server with 128 GB, where 60–70% is allocated to the DBMS cache. Less memory means more disk reads, making NVMe drives critical.
NVMe only for data and WAL/logs, preferably separate; RAID1/10, no RAID5 for write operations. Intensive OLTP workloads on SATA SSDs hit a queue bottleneck — NVMe removes this ceiling, which is visible in response times from the very first day.

For a database up to 200 GB with a hundred active connections: 12–16 cores at 3.0 GHz+, 128 GB RAM, two NVMe drives in a mirror for data, and a separate volume for WAL — for example, a Dell R650 or HPE DL360 Gen10. Send us your database size and number of connections — we will provide a quote.
Yes, the requirements are similar; MS SQL additionally loves memory — choose a model with spare slots. We supply the server with a pre-configured OS and DBMS turnkey, including backup.
