Never straight on production.
We make a full copy, update it, and go through the site looking for what broke. Custom code is located first — that is what determines whether the update is an hour or a week.
Only after the copy works do we touch production, with a backup and a rollback plan. Then we set up a schedule, so the next update is routine rather than a project.

Does the licence have to be active?
