How to test your internet speed in Kazakhstan

Most homes in Kazakhstan are now connected by fiber, and mobile 4G and 5G cover all large cities. Still, the number in your contract and the real speed in your apartment often differ. Here is how to measure speed properly and what to do if it is lower than you pay for.

Step 1. Prepare the connection

• Connect the computer to the router by cable. It removes the effect of walls, neighbouring networks and weak Wi-Fi.
• Stop downloads: system and game updates, torrents, cloud sync, video on other devices.
• Turn off VPN. It routes traffic through a distant server and raises ping.
• Restart the router if it has been running for weeks.

Step 2. Run several tests

Open the internet speed test and press GO. The test detects your provider and the nearest server automatically. Run it 2–3 times and take the average, then repeat in the evening between 8 and 11 pm, when networks are busiest.

Step 3. Read the result

• Download over cable should be close to your plan.
• Upload on fiber is usually equal to download or slightly lower; on mobile it is much lower.
• Ping to servers in Almaty and Astana is usually 5–20 ms on fiber and 30–60 ms on 4G.
• Jitter under 5–10 ms is not noticeable; higher jitter breaks video calls.

Mobile internet: Beeline, Kcell, Tele2 and Altel

Turn off Wi-Fi on the phone before testing. 4G in cities usually delivers tens of megabits per second, less at peak hours and outside town; 5G in Almaty, Astana and Shymkent gives hundreds of megabits where there is coverage. Test near a window and in the middle of the room: the difference can be several times.

Why your speed is lower than your plan

• Wi-Fi. On 2.4 GHz real speed rarely exceeds 50–80 Mbps. Use the 5 GHz network if your router supports it.
• Router and computer. Budget routers and old network cards stop at 100 Mbps. Plans above 100 Mbps need gigabit ports and Wi-Fi 5 or Wi-Fi 6.
• The line. If speed over cable is well below the plan at different times of day, only your provider's support can fix it.

What to prepare for support

Your contract number, 3–5 test results over cable at different times (the test has a Copy result button) and a list of what you already checked: restart, cable, another computer, VPN off. With this information support can pass your request to engineers faster.
